UK gov recovers £480m from fraud, launches new AI tool

The UK government’s significant crackdown on fraud has saved over £480 million, primarily through the use of advanced AI technology. Of this, £186 million was recovered from fraudulent claims linked to the Covid-19 pandemic. The initiative has successfully blocked numerous companies with questionable Bounce Back Loans from dissolving without repayment. Additionally, the effort targeted unlawful claims for council tax discounts and illegal subletting of social housing.

Cabinet Office Minister Josh Simons emphasized the importance of protecting taxpayer money, stating that fraud undermines the integrity of public services. The government aims to save £45 billion by enhancing public sector efficiency and is introducing a new AI fraud prevention tool designed to identify vulnerabilities in policies before exploitation. Initial tests indicate this tool could reduce fraud identification time by 80%. The UK also plans to license this technology internationally, reinforcing its commitment to global anti-fraud efforts.
