Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly integral to global healthcare, yet UK clinicians are hesitant due to ethical concerns and regulatory frameworks. The recent Elsevier Clinician of the Future report surveyed over 2,200 healthcare professionals worldwide, revealing that while global AI adoption is rising—48% now using it compared to 26% in 2024—only 34% of UK clinicians engage with AI technologies. Key applications include drug interaction checks and clinical note writing. However, skepticism remains, with 53% resistant to using AI for clinical decisions. Trust issues significantly impact adoption, as 81% of UK clinicians prioritize data confidentiality and seek accuracy in AI tools. Concerns about NHS IT capabilities also linger. With 62% of UK respondents believing AI can boost patient outcomes, there’s potential for improvement with strategic integration, clinician training, and regulatory support. The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency’s proactive role in the Health AI Global Regulatory Network aims to address these challenges and foster trust in AI in UK healthcare.
