Though AI tools like ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini are gaining popularity, concerns about “hallucinations”—instances of incorrect or fabricated information—persist. Among users who seek factual data, 23% encounter these inaccuracies frequently. However, 17% report never noticing them. Trust in AI as a credible information source remains low; only 14% rated it a 6 or higher on a scale of 10, comparable to tabloid newspapers. In contrast, academic journals received a trust score of 60%. Trust correlates with user experience of hallucinations; among daily fact-finders, 43% rate AI’s reliability favorably, contrasting sharply with just 3% of non-users.
