Who Owns ChatGPT and OpenAI? AI Model Ownership Explained

Elon Musk, who co-founded OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, no longer holds any ownership stakes in the organization. He resigned from OpenAI’s Board of Directors in 2018, citing conflicts with his roles at Tesla and SpaceX. Although he initially aimed to invest $1 billion in OpenAI, Musk withdrew his financial support after attempting to take control of the company, which he believed was lagging behind Google. This led OpenAI to adopt a “capped” for-profit model alongside its non-profit structure. Despite his initial involvement, Musk expressed concerns about AI’s rapid development, joining notable figures like Steve Wozniak in signing an open letter against it in March 2023. Nonetheless, he has introduced his own AI chatbot, Grok, affiliated with X (formerly Twitter). Thus, while Musk’s relationship with OpenAI has shifted, he continues to explore AI technology through his ventures.
