Reasoning models, or reasoning LLMs, enhance their responses by generating intermediate reasoning steps before delivering final answers. These models exhibit notable performance improvements in complex tasks, expanding their application in generative AI and AI agents. While some models reveal their reasoning process, others opt for summarization, yet all fundamentally use advanced algorithms to predict outcomes based on training data patterns. Despite their sophisticated behavior, reasoning LLMs do not possess consciousness or artificial general intelligence (AGI). Research, including a 2025 study by Apple, questions the scalability of their reasoning abilities. Initially introduced by OpenAI in September 2024, advancements in reasoning LLMs continued with releases from Alibaba and Google, culminating in the January 2025 open-source DeepSeek-R1 model. This model’s transparent training methodology has inspired others, leading to the emergence of various reasoning LLMs from companies like IBM, Anthropic, and Mistral AI, further advancing the field of artificial intelligence.
