As generative AI technology, particularly ChatGPT, surges, so does its massive power consumption and environmental impact. A single ChatGPT request uses about ten times the electricity of a Google search, generating approximately 4.32 grams of CO₂ and costing about $0.36. With nearly 1 billion users anticipated by year-end, the demand for AI is skyrocketing, rising from 116 million users in 2020 to a projected 378 million by 2025. This explosive growth has led to a surge in data centers, expected to nearly double energy use from 415 TWh in 2024 to 945 TWh by 2030. India, housing around 190 data centers, is slated to see its capacity increase from 1.4 GW to 9 GW by 2030, accounting for 3% of its electricity consumption. Experts advocate sustainable practices, emphasizing renewable energy, efficient cooling systems, and training for responsible AI use to mitigate environmental impacts as technology evolves.
