Around 120 U.S. colleges are piloting CourseWise, an innovative AI tool from UC Berkeley designed to streamline transfer course equivalencies. Credit transfer often confuses students and burdens administrators due to inconsistent evaluation practices across institutions. CourseWise aims to tackle this issue by analyzing historical transfer credits and suggesting equivalent courses at different colleges. By consolidating various formats into a user-friendly interface, CourseWise eliminates the tedious manual comparisons that staff previously faced. The tool improves efficiency—reducing credit evaluation times from 45 days to just 48-72 hours—and is based on over a decade of research in human-AI interaction. As institutions upload their articulation histories, CourseWise enhances its recommendations, which could boost student retention and enrollment by simplifying the transfer process. Future plans include creating student-facing features to aid degree planning and expanding data integration capabilities, ultimately promoting smoother academic pathways and fostering reciprocal transfer opportunities between colleges.
