As AI permeates daily life, enhancing AI literacy, especially in education, is crucial. Jake Renzella, a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science, emphasizes the importance of understanding AI’s workings rather than just using it. AI literacy enables the next generation to engage ethically with technology that influences critical decisions. Renzella points out a common knowledge gap among children regarding AI identification, highlighting the need to grasp AI fundamentals, including its training methods, data handling, and potential biases.
In collaboration with the charity Day of AI Australia, Renzella’s team is developing resources to educate students about AI. A notable initiative is the “Win the Farm” project, where students created AI bots in a simulated election scenario, learning to recognize and critique misinformation in social media. By fostering AI literacy, we equip youth to question, shape, and ethically navigate AI technologies, empowering them to drive innovation and influence future societal applications.
