Anthropic has rolled out an exciting update for its AI assistant, Claude, enabling it to directly operate users’ computers via the macOS desktop app. This innovative feature, currently in research preview, allows Claude to open applications, navigate browsers, and perform various desktop tasks, significantly enhancing its capabilities beyond simple chat-based interactions. Claude prioritizes efficiency by first utilizing connectors for linked services like Gmail and Slack, resorting to browser navigation when needed, and employing screen interaction as a last resort.
Claude can compile reports, fill spreadsheets, test apps, and navigate internal dashboards, working continuously even while users step away, provided the computer remains active. However, user approval is required for each application interaction, ensuring privacy and security. Notably, sensitive data and financial transactions are restricted. Currently, this feature is available for Pro and Max plan users only, as it undergoes further testing for real-world applications. Be cautious of visible information; Anthropic recommends closing confidential files before use.
