Unofficial AI Tools Gaining Popularity Among Data Professionals

Unapproved AI tools widely used by data professionals

Research from General Assembly reveals that 40% of data professionals use unapproved AI tools in the workplace, compromising data security and privacy. The survey, involving 269 data analysts, scientists, and engineers in the US and UK, found that while 79% leverage AI, many lack formal training. Only 19% received role-specific AI training, resulting in increased productivity, improved data quality, and enhanced analytical creativity among those who did. However, 32% of respondents felt only “somewhat confident” in their AI skills, and 18% reported no impact from AI on their work. The findings underscore a pressing need for tailored AI training programs to bridge the gap between rapid technological adoption and compliance, as generic lessons fall short. Daniele Grassi, CEO of General Assembly, advocates for structured, role-based AI education to optimize usage and drive better business outcomes. Future research will further explore the effects of varied AI training on workplace performance and policies.
