A recent study by OpenAI and Harvard economist David Deming analyzed 1.5 million user interactions, revealing that over 75% sought practical guidance and writing help. ChatGPT is increasingly seen as a personal assistant, with 700 million weekly users, demonstrating its potential to replace traditional search engines like Google. The study highlighted distinct user categories: “asking,” “doing,” and “expressing,” while revealing gender and age trends in usage. Women predominantly seek practical assistance, whereas men use it for technical help. Notably, half of users are under 26, and reliance on ChatGPT is so significant that U.S. users would require $98 to forgo it for a month. Despite concerns over dependence, OpenAI frames this as a $97 billion opportunity, shaping the tool’s future growth and application in everyday life.
