The US Army has awarded a five-year, $98.9 million contract to San Francisco startup TurbineOne for its Frontline Perception System (FPS), an AI tool designed to identify and track military targets on the battlefield. FPS leverages a no-code, hardware-agnostic machine learning platform that integrates data from various sensors—air, land, sea, and space—to detect threats such as drones and enemy positions. Notably, this system operates independently of internet connectivity, delivering intelligence directly to soldiers’ mobile devices. TurbineOne emphasizes that while FPS automates target assessment, human operators will always make final decisions, aligning with DoD’s responsible AI principles. Initially piloted across multiple military branches, FPS has proven capabilities in both battlefield scenarios and logistical applications, such as identifying debris on airfields.
