The US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is launching an investigation into the effects of AI chatbots, like ChatGPT, on children’s mental health. This inquiry involves requests for internal documents from major tech companies, including OpenAI, Meta Platforms, and Character.AI. According to the Wall Street Journal (WSJ), the FTC aims to assess whether these AI tools are influencing youth well-being. The initiative reportedly received approval from the administration of former President Donald Trump. Additionally, First Lady Melania Trump chaired a White House meeting with the Task Force on Artificial Intelligence Education, where tech leaders, including Google CEO Sundar Pichai, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, discussed making AI more accessible for students and workers. This follows President Trump’s executive order on advancing AI education for American youth, signed on April 23. The investigation highlights growing concerns about AI’s role in child development and mental health.
