Advanced Research Computing expands large language model access | Virginia Tech News

Leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) in education and research is vital, and the Division of Information Technology prioritizes secure access to trustworthy AI tools. Alberto Cano, Associate Vice President for Research Computing, emphasizes the initiative to provide reliable AI resources that enhance academic workflows. Recently, the Advanced Research Computing (ARC) introduced a comprehensive suite of large language model (LLM) services for faculty and students, building on their previous AI-as-a-Service. These services are securely hosted on-premises, ensuring user data remains confidential, even allowing for high-risk data classifications. The LLMs are designed for all skill levels and are free to use, accessible via a user-friendly web interface. With models like Z.ai GLM-4.5-Air and OpenAI gpt-oss-120b, users can perform diverse tasks, including image generation and web search. Additionally, an OpenAI-compatible API enables easy integration with existing applications. More details can be found on the AI documentation page.
