Volvo is set to roll out a significant over-the-air (OTA) software update to 2.5 million vehicles from 2020 onwards, integrating the Google Gemini AI into their Android-based infotainment systems. This update modernizes older models to mirror the interface of the latest models, including the EX30, EX60, and EX90, all without requiring a dealership visit. Volvo’s chief technology officer, Anders Bell, described the update as one of the largest in automotive history, enhancing the user experience significantly. The new Google Gemini replaces the former Google Assistant and features a more conversational AI capability, allowing drivers to interact with the system through natural language. Users can execute tasks like messaging, translation, and gaining information about their destination seamlessly. While many Volvo owners may welcome this upgrade, those preferring the older interface can opt out of OTA updates through their vehicle settings. This initiative showcases Volvo’s commitment to modernizing its fleet with advanced technology.
