Google is enhancing its Gemini AI chatbot with advanced shopping features, partnering with major retailers like Walmart, Shopify, and Wayfair. This upgrade aims to turn Gemini into a virtual merchant and assistant, allowing customers to make purchases directly through the chat interface via an instant checkout feature. This development was announced during the National Retail Federation’s convention, highlighting AI’s role in e-commerce. Walmart’s John Furner emphasized that this represents a pivotal shift from traditional web searches to agent-led commerce. Customers can get tailored shopping recommendations by linking their Walmart accounts, simplifying the buying process. Competitors like OpenAI and Amazon are also racing to create seamless AI-driven shopping experiences. OpenAI recently introduced a similar feature in ChatGPT, enabling users to buy from various retailers without leaving the app. Initially available to U.S. users, Google plans to expand its new AI shopping capabilities globally in the coming months.
