Waymo is integrating Google’s Gemini AI chatbot as an in-car assistant for its robotaxis, enhancing rider experiences. Researcher Jane Manchun Wong uncovered a “Waymo Ride Assistant Meta-Prompt” in the mobile app code, revealing the assistant’s ability to answer questions, manage cabin functions, and provide reassurance, although not yet available in public versions.
According to Waymo spokesperson Julia Ilina, the company continually develops features to improve rider interaction. The assistant, designed to be a friendly companion, uses clear language and personalized greetings. While it can control aspects like temperature and lighting, certain features such as route changes are excluded.
Gemini is instructed to differentiate itself from the Waymo Driver and handle inquiries about competitors without speculation. Overall, the AI assistant aims to deliver useful information safely and unobtrusively while avoiding complex driving-related discussions.
