Dr. Abhilash Pandya and his research team in the College of Engineering are exploring the use of artificial intelligence tools to better serve both patients and medical personnel during surgery.

Researchers at Wayne State University, led by Dr. Abhilash Pandya, are pioneering the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in surgery to enhance patient safety and surgical accuracy. Their study, “An AI Approach to Markerless Augmented Reality in Surgical Robots,” published in Robotics, explores using augmented reality (AR) to project critical information during procedures, improving visualization for surgeons. By utilizing the DaVinci Surgical System, they aim to refine accuracy through AI, reducing the risks of surgical errors that could lead to severe complications. Pandya also investigates incorporating ChatGPT to enable voice-activated assistance for surgical teams, allowing real-time monitoring and support. This advancement positions AI as a pivotal tool in the surgical field, promising improved safety, enhanced training opportunities, and an overall better experience in operating rooms.
