The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has criticized Disney’s recent licensing deal with OpenAI, claiming it legitimizes the “theft” of writers’ work. The agreement allows OpenAI’s Sora to create user-generated videos featuring characters from Disney, Marvel, and Star Wars, which WGA argues undermines the value of their creative contributions. WGA plans to meet with Disney to scrutinize the deal’s terms, particularly regarding how it may utilize member-generated content. This comes alongside Disney’s $1 billion equity investment in OpenAI. The union stresses that AI companies have unlawfully used vast libraries of creative work for AI training and called for legal action to protect intellectual property (IP). Additionally, SAG-AFTRA expressed concerns over the three-year contract, pledging to monitor compliance with contracts relating to performers’ likenesses and voices. The deal includes iconic characters such as Mickey Mouse and characters from major franchises, indicating a significant intersection of AI technology and entertainment.
