Who Thrives and Who Struggles in the Age of AI Adoption

The 'winners and losers' in the adoption of AI

A new study by the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI) and the Department of Finance reveals that AI adoption in Ireland presents both advantages and challenges. On one hand, highly educated workers may face job losses, with an estimated 7% of current positions at risk due to AI technologies, particularly in high-skilled roles like IT and customer service. Conversely, for those who remain employed, average wages could increase as productivity rises. Occupations less susceptible to AI include health professionals and builders. However, the report warns that AI could exacerbate income inequality, benefiting capital income holders while displacing lower-skilled workers. In terms of fiscal impact, Ireland’s tax and welfare system can initially absorb some income losses, yet large-scale job displacement may strain public finances, necessitating upskilling and lifelong learning to navigate the AI transition effectively. This research highlights the imperative for strategic responses to secure both jobs and productivity in an AI-driven future.
