Zcash’s original creators have officially separated from the Electric Coin Company (ECC) to establish a new independent entity, ZODL. This change marks a significant split in Zcash’s history and was first hinted at in January after ECC staff resigned due to governance disputes with its owning nonprofit, Bootstrap. The Zashin wallet will be renamed to “Zodl,” reflecting this autonomy, while retaining full compatibility with the Zcash blockchain. The new organization comprises the original engineers who developed Zcash’s core privacy technology and wallet infrastructure. Despite this split, Zcash will not incur a blockchain fork, and the ZEC asset remains unchanged. This move mirrors the OpenAI-Anthropic situation, emphasizing how crucial developer continuity is in decentralized ecosystems. The ECC still operates under Bootstrap but without its founding technical team, presenting a new era for Zcash development. The ongoing focus will be on expanding shielded ZEC adoption independently of ECC and the Zcash Development Fund.
