Indian quick-commerce company Zepto has introduced an innovative internal tool, enabling users to place orders at Zepto Cafe using natural language through a large language model (LLM) like Anthropic’s Claude. Developed by a Zepto engineer and shared on GitHub, this tool was highlighted by CEO Aadit Palicha on LinkedIn. Utilizing the Model Context Protocol (MCP), this open-source framework enhances communication between AI and live services, allowing access to real-time data and task execution. Unlike traditional chatbots, MCP interprets user instructions and orchestrates specific actions through a controlled interface. Playwright, a browser automation tool, manages order placement by emulating user actions on Zepto’s website. Currently, this feature isn’t available on Zepto’s consumer app, requiring manual setup. Emphasizing security, sensitive information is protected through environment variables, and sessions are stored locally. Similar initiatives are emerging in India’s consumer internet landscape, with Zomato implementing comparable solutions.
