Advocacy groups urge YouTube to protect kids from 'AI slop' videos

Children’s advocacy group Fairplay has raised serious concerns about YouTube’s AI-generated videos, particularly on YouTube Kids, warning that they adversely affect children’s development. In a letter to YouTube CEO Neal Mohan, signed by over 200 organizations and experts, the group cites “AI slop” as detrimental, distorting reality and prolonging online engagement at the cost of vital offline activities. They demand clearly labeled AI content, a ban on such videos in YouTube Kids, and options for parents to disable AI-generated content.

Despite YouTube’s claims of maintaining high content standards, Fairplay argues current measures are insufficient, allowing unlabelled AI videos to reach vulnerable viewers. Following a jury’s verdict on social media increasing children’s screen time irresponsibly, Fairplay contends that YouTube’s algorithm promotes these harmful videos. With growing backlash against low-quality AI content, Fairplay advocates for urgent reforms to protect children’s online experiences and ensure their well-being.
