AI Won’t Replace Teachers—But Teachers Who Use AI Will Change Teaching (Opinion)

As artificial intelligence (AI) rapidly evolves, concerns about job displacement, especially in teaching, have arisen. A Pew Research survey indicated that nearly one-third of experts foresee AI threatening educators’ roles in the next 20 years. However, the focus should be on how we interact with AI, rather than our current comfort with it. AI can serve as a valuable classroom assistant, alleviating workload by generating lesson plans, organizing resources, and summarizing data, while teachers maintain critical oversight. This technology, when blended with sound pedagogy and professional development, can enhance teaching efficiency and reduce burnout in a climate of teacher shortages.

AI should not replace human connection, critical thinking, or mentorship—attributes integral to effective education. Instead, it can be a supportive tool, fostering deeper learning when used judiciously. The real challenge lies in preparing educators to harness AI responsibly, ensuring they lead students with insight, curiosity, and care as they navigate an evolving educational landscape.
