Amazon Implements Stricter Oversight Following AI Coding Tool-Related Outages: Report | Tech News

Last year, Amazon ‌announced that its cloud computing unit AWS would invest 15.7 ‌billion euros in data centres in Spain's northeastern Aragon region, which would support the creation of an estimated average of 17,500 jobs per year at local companies through 2033. (Image: Reuters)

Amazon is enhancing its coding guardrails following a series of service outages attributed to its AI coding assistant, Q. Senior Vice President Dave Treadwell announced the implementation of temporary safety practices to regulate significant code changes, alongside investments in more robust safeguards. This decision follows multiple incidents since Q3 2025, including severe disruptions resulting in major order losses and erroneous customer experiences on March 2 and 5, 2026.

To mitigate risks, engineers will now need thorough documentation and multiple approvals for code modifications, as well as compliance with Amazon’s reliability engineering policies. Reports indicate that a significant AWS outage was also linked to these AI tools. Despite denying a direct connection between recent job cuts and service issues—over 16,000 roles eliminated—engineers report increased incidents requiring urgent responses. This situation underlines the challenges of integrating AI into software development without established best practices and safeguards.
