Bihar elections: ECI advises political parties against misuse of AI based tools

On October 9, the Election Commission of India (ECI) emphasized the importance of adhering to the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) during the upcoming Bihar Legislative Assembly elections and related bye-elections. With MCC in effect, all political parties must ensure their content on social media aligns with established guidelines, particularly regarding the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and synthetic videos. Parties are instructed to limit criticism of opponents to policy-related matters, avoiding personal attacks and unverified allegations. The ECI specifically warned against creating deep fakes or misleading content that could distort electoral integrity. Political entities must label AI-generated content clearly, using terms like “AI-Generated” or “Synthetic Content.” Strict monitoring of social media activities will be conducted to maintain a fair election atmosphere. Violations of these guidelines will face strict repercussions, underscoring the ECI’s commitment to upholding a transparent electoral process.
