Editorial: India’s balanced approach on AI

The newly published AI Governance Guidelines emphasize a people-centric approach to harnessing artificial intelligence (AI) for inclusive growth. Amid global concerns about AI misuse, such as misinformation and deepfakes, these guidelines aim to balance innovation with accountability. Drafted by a committee led by Prof. Balaraman Ravindran from IIT-Madras, the guidelines encourage cooperation among policymakers, researchers, and industries without imposing strict regulations immediately. By establishing the AI Governance Group and the Technology and Policy Expert Committee, India seeks to develop a flexible framework that promotes AI innovation while managing risks effectively. Unlike the European Union’s stringent AI Act and the U.S. reliance on market forces, India opts for adaptive governance to foster competitiveness. Existing laws, such as the Information Technology Act and the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, can address emerging AI-related risks. This comprehensive and unique strategy positions India to leverage AI’s transformative potential responsibly.
