Microsoft is collaborating with the Philippine Department of Education (DepEd) to enhance literacy nationwide through AI-powered reading tools. Over 14,000 students from 60 schools have already benefited from these innovations, which include Microsoft’s Reading Progress and Reading Coach tools. These tools enable independent reading practice while providing teachers with immediate feedback on student fluency and pacing. In Bais City, for instance, reading assessments that previously took two days are now completed in just two hours, allowing for more focused lesson planning. The READExcel pilot program in three schools effectively reduced struggling readers from 14 to zero. According to Carmela Oracion, assistant secretary for DepEd, AI tools are essential for fostering confident, lifelong learners. The initiative aims to scale these programs across more schools, enhancing teacher capacity and aligning with the National Reading Program. Microsoft Philippines CEO Peter Maquera emphasizes that the partnership will bridge the literacy gap and empower all Filipino learners.
