FIU recently hosted a pivotal panel discussion in Washington, D.C., exploring the future of artificial intelligence (AI) in healthcare. Opening remarks were made by Elijah Dorrielan, an FIU Honors student, and President Jeanette M. Nuñez. The esteemed panel included leaders from federal and academic research, such as Diana Azzam from the Robert Stempel College of Public Health, Sunita Krishnan from the National Academy of Medicine, and Sylvia Shabaya Gayle from the National Cancer Institute. Moderated by Dave Clarke of Punchbowl News, the discussion underscored the transformative potential of AI in medicine, while emphasizing the necessity for strong governance and public trust. Panelists highlighted successful AI applications in clinical diagnosis and urged the establishment of clear regulatory frameworks. Krishnan called for strong accountability mechanisms, while Azzam affirmed FIU’s commitment to AI research and interdisciplinary collaboration. Over 20 students participated, reinforcing FIU’s engagement in national dialogues on AI’s impact in healthcare.
