Google has launched its free autonomous coding agent, Jules, which leverages AI for code generation, debugging, and optimisation. Built on the Gemini 2.5 Pro model, Jules supports a diverse range of users, from seasoned developers to novices, by automating tasks such as feature development and API integration. The free version is limited to 15 tasks daily, while the Pro tier offers enhanced capabilities.
Beta testing commenced in May 2025, processing hundreds of thousands of tasks, and new features include an intuitive interface with visual explanations and audio summaries. Integrated with GitHub and Gemini CLI, Jules can suggest optimisations and write tests.
Although Google aims to elevate coding independence, concerns about job displacement and code originality remain. Experts stress the need for oversight to prevent misuse in critical systems.
