At the ISTELive 25 + ASCD Annual Conference, educators discussed barriers students face in reading comprehension, such as limited vocabulary and boredom. Jessica Pack, a 6th grade language arts teacher, suggested using artificial intelligence (AI) tools to enhance reading skills. Despite concerns that AI can stifle creativity, Pack argued for a student-centered approach to AI, which could bolster comprehension. She highlighted a method where students generate keywords from texts, create prompts for AI image generators, and assess the accuracy of the resulting images. This process fosters metacognition and deeper understanding of the material. With declining reading scores reported by the 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress, innovative strategies like these are essential. Furthermore, Pack emphasized the importance of digital citizenship by teaching students to cite AI-generated content. This approach aligns with the growing interest in the “science of reading,” focusing on evidence-based methods to improve literacy skills in schools.
