The Maharashtra government, in collaboration with IIT Bombay, is developing a Rs 3-crore AI tool to identify suspected illegal Bangladeshi nationals and Rohingyas. This language-based system, initiated by the state’s information technology department, analyzes speech patterns and linguistic usage to aid law enforcement in preliminary identification. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the tool, currently showing 60% reliability, is expected to reach 100% within six months. Once fully operational, it will assist police in conducting thorough nationality investigations based on documentation. The initiative aims to “identify and deport 100% of illegal Bangladeshis” in Mumbai, confronting challenges posed by fraudulent Indian documents. Additionally, plans for detention centers have been announced, with land provided by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation. However, the Congress party has raised concerns, urging the government to publicly share deportation figures to substantiate its claims regarding illegal immigration management in the state.
