A significant cheating scandal is unfolding at Yonsei University in Seoul, involving around 600 students suspected of using AI tools like ChatGPT during their midterm exam for a “Natural Language Processing” course. The professor reported multiple instances of academic dishonesty, threatening students with a zero score if caught cheating. To monitor the exam, students recorded their screens, hands, and faces; however, many manipulated their setups to avoid detection. Following the professor’s announcement, a poll revealed over half of respondents admitted to cheating. The rapid rise of AI usage in education poses challenges, with a survey indicating that 91.7% of students in South Korea use AI for academic tasks, yet 71.1% of universities lack clear policies governing its use. This incident raises concerns about academic integrity and the necessity for guidelines regarding AI in education.
