OpenAI has partnered with SB Energy, a SoftBank Group company, to enhance AI and energy infrastructure in the U.S. through the Stargate initiative, following a US$ 500 billion commitment announced in January 2025. Both companies are investing US$ 500 million in SB Energy, which will develop and operate a 1.2 GW data center in Milam County, Texas. This collaboration combines SB Energy’s expertise in data center infrastructure and energy development with OpenAI’s capabilities in data center engineering. Rich Hossfeld, co-CEO of SB Energy, stated that this partnership accelerates the creation of advanced AI data centers and essential energy systems. Additionally, the companies aim to establish a standardized approach to AI data center construction that optimizes cost and energy delivery. SB Energy is currently developing several multi-gigawatt data center campuses across the U.S., with initial facilities expected to start operating in 2026, focusing on sustainability and efficiency.
