OpenAI has initiated tests for advertising on ChatGPT, targeting logged-in adult users with free accounts and a new ad-supported subscription tier, while exempting paying Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu users. This move comes shortly after rival Anthropic’s Super Bowl ad, where OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman criticized ads as dishonest and painted Anthropic’s offerings as elitist. OpenAI aims to generate a cash flow to address its significant investor funding, estimated at over $60 billion, as profitability isn’t expected until 2030. Advertisements, tied to user interactions, promise to maintain privacy by not sharing sensitive data with advertisers. However, if personalization is enabled, ads will be tailored based on user conversations. OpenAI clarifies that ads won’t influence ChatGPT responses and will appear distinctly from chatbot content. Future adjustments to the ad program are anticipated, emphasizing ongoing adaptability in a competitive and evolving advertising landscape.
