OpenAI is considering embedding advertisements in ChatGPT’s responses as a means to monetize its popular AI chatbot, which currently relies on a subscription model. Despite many users accessing ChatGPT for free, the company faces pressure to generate revenue to fund its extensive infrastructure. The proposed strategy, referred to as “intent-based monetization,” aims to seamlessly incorporate ads into user conversations, offering product recommendations directly relevant to queries.
For instance, if a user asks for marathon tips, ChatGPT could suggest local running clinics or brands. OpenAI is also exploring “generative ads” where the chatbot creates ads, alongside potential sponsorship opportunities for brands within specific product categories. However, the challenge lies in maintaining user trust while integrating ads effectively. OpenAI must ensure that advertisements enhance the user experience without overshadowing organic responses, as the global advertising industry is projected to reach $1 trillion in value.
