Washington County deputies are piloting AI that drafts police reports from bodycam footage, cutting administrative time significantly.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office in Oregon is piloting an AI transcription service, Draft One, to streamline police report writing using bodycam footage. This innovative tool analyzes videos from Axon body-worn cameras to create draft reports for various incidents, including theft and DUII. According to Corporal David Huey, the AI reduces report completion time from 90 minutes to just 15-20, allowing deputies to concentrate on policing.

The 60-day trial requires deputies to review and edit all AI-generated drafts, ensuring that at least 20% of each report is manually adjusted for accuracy. Minor errors are intentionally embedded to keep officers engaged. Human judgment is crucial for interpreting emotional nuances that AI cannot capture. All data is securely stored within Axon’s network. Following the pilot, the sheriff’s office and district attorney will assess the tool’s effectiveness for potential permanent integration into law enforcement. This could signify a major advancement in using AI in policing operations.
