Sam Altman, co-founder of OpenAI, recently met with UK technology secretary Peter Kyle to discuss making ChatGPT Plus available for free to UK residents. Although the idea of providing free access to this premium plan—which typically costs $20 per month—was brought up, it appears to have stalled. Sources indicate the proposal may have originated from Altman, but Kyle showed reluctance due to potential costs, which could reach £2 billion. Despite ongoing discussions between OpenAI and the UK government on utilizing AI technology in public services, free access to ChatGPT Plus seems unlikely. OpenAI noted that millions of Brits are already using the free version of ChatGPT daily. The UK government clarified there is currently no active proposal to grant free access to ChatGPT Plus. Both parties aim to democratize AI access, ensuring its economic benefits reach more people.
