Samsung Electronics is set to supply high-bandwidth memory chips (HBM4) to OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, for its first custom artificial intelligence processor. This partnership, reported by the Korean Economic Daily, involves the delivery of up to 800 million gigabits of these advanced memory chips in the latter half of 2024. The collaboration builds on a previous agreement where Samsung provided memory components for OpenAI’s Stargate initiative. The new AI processing unit is being developed in partnership with Broadcom, with production handled by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company starting in Q3 2024. OpenAI aims to release the chip by year-end to meet the increasing demand for ChatGPT and related services. Additionally, Samsung has expanded its AI chip collaborations by signing a memorandum of understanding with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) to supply HBM4 chips for the next generation of AMD’s AI graphics processing units. Samsung declined to comment on the new agreement.
