A recent study by Proofpoint reveals critical insights into the evolving data protection landscape, emphasizing rising data volumes, AI-related vulnerabilities, and persistent human errors as key challenges. Surveying 1,000 security professionals across ten countries, the 2025 Data Security Landscape study found that 85% of organizations faced at least one data loss incident in the past year, often due to human negligence. Notably, 58% of breaches were linked to careless employees or contractors, while 42% involved compromised accounts. As data management pressures mount, especially in firms with over 10,000 employees storing over a petabyte of data, concerns about AI-generated risks grow. Many lack visibility into AI access, heightening fears of data leaks. Organizations are increasingly relying on AI tools for data classification and anomaly detection, yet 64% use multiple security vendors, complicating incident response. To enhance data security, firms must adopt unified platforms, streamline oversight, and strengthen controls over both human and automated interactions.
