Unveiling Google Gemini: How It Detects Deepfakes and AI-Generated Images – Everything You Need to Know

Google has launched an image verification feature in its Gemini AI app to combat deepfakes and AI-generated images, utilizing its proprietary digital watermarking technology, SynthID. This innovation embeds invisible markers into the pixels of images created or modified by Google’s AI, ensuring normal appearance while enabling Gemini to determine the image’s source. Since its 2023 launch, SynthID has already watermarked over 20 billion images, enhancing transparency around AI-generated content.

Users can easily verify images by uploading them to the Gemini app and asking questions about their origins, as Gemini scans for the hidden SynthID signal. However, the feature can only identify images created with Google’s AI models; it cannot validate images from competitors like ChatGPT or Grok AI. Moving forward, images generated by Nano Banana Pro within Gemini, as well as those used in Vertex AI and Google Ads, will also include C2PA metadata for added transparency.
